This charming bustling city greets its visitors with an aura of warmth and welcome, exuding culture and history all in one go. There is a distinct Moorish feel to the architecture, not surprisingly as the Moors occupied it for 800 years. Birth place to the Roman Emperor Hadrian and home to Don Juan, Seville is steeped in history, which is reflected in everyday life. The luxury hotels Seville offers complement the atmosphere of this exciting city, offering excellent facilities such as rooftop swimming pools, allowing guest to enjoy fabulous vistas as they relax.
Start by exploring the Santa Cruz neighborhood, once a Jewish area and now a network of alleyways overlooked by balconies overflowing with flowers. The narrow streets were built to offer protection against the blistering mid day sun and now serve as a tourist attraction, interspaced with plazas. Here you will also discover a multitude of old churches, including the Cathedral of Seville, one of the largest in the world. Included within this spectacle is the Giralda, a minaret that was turned into a bell tower and now stands as one of Seville's symbols. Climb up it to take in some breathtaking vistas of the city and depending on the heat of the day you may need to take a siesta after the strenuous climb in one of the luxury hotels Seville has on offer.
Nearby is the Alcazar, a Moorish fort converted to a Royal Palace. It is special as it is considered an excellent example of mudejar architecture, of which there is very little remaining. Within the impressive walls you will find an intricately designed Patio de las Doncellas, ornate gardens and the serene Baths of Lady Maria de Padilla, rainwater tanks beneath the Patio del Crucero.
In the old city you will find the Casa de Pilatos, named as it supposedly looked like Pontius Pilate's home thought of as one of the most beautiful palaces in Seville, it is home to statues and fountains. Its gardens and patios jostle with the mixed architecture to form a perfect match. The Museo de Bellas Artes is well thought of across Spain, situated in an ex mercy convent and home to fifteen exhibition rooms. Outside in the square is a weekly Sunday market where it may be possible to pick up some good souvenirs.
Cross over the slow moving Guardalquivir River by means of the Triana bridge, stunning at night when lit up, to the Triana quarter. A lively area enjoyed by all it is home to ceramic factories and more narrow lanes, leading to the Santa Ana church. It is a traditional area but now home to expensive houses. During Easter week enjoy the parade of el Cachorro if staying in one of the luxury hotels Seville has on offer in this district.
The city is synonymous with bull fighting and flamenco and no trip is complete without experiencing a fight in the magnificent bullring, thought to be one of the oldest in Spain. Not for the feint hearted it needs to be seen to fully appreciate the rituals involved. Flamenco is flamboyant and passionate and is extremely popular across the whole country and the Museo del Baile Flamenco offers performances at the weekends as well as a wealth of information regarding the dance. Real flamenco can be seen at the Cultural Center and there are free shows at La Carbonieria by the Cathedral most nights.
The April Festival of Feria de Sevilla is host to all night dancing as well as bull fights and horse riding and across the whole country it is the most celebrated festival of all. Easter sees the Semanta Santa processions followed by the Feria de Abril, which can only be described as a rather manic party after the constraints of Semanta Santa. The day is taken over by riders in traditional costumes and at night the Fair comes alive, with Flamenco and traditional dress, taps and music high on the agenda.
This is a city that should be savored and time taken to explore its magical facets. A cursory glance just won't do it justice, as Sevillians live life to the very full in a whirlwind of joyous pleasure. Don't forget to enjoy some tapas and slow the pace down with a glass or two of sherry.
